This page configures payment gateways and their settings for processing checkout payments.

Sandbox Client Id

Stores the PayPal sandbox client ID used while testing checkout.

Stores the PayPal sandbox secret used to authenticate test API requests.

Stores the live PayPal secret used to authenticate production API requests.

Mode

Selects whether this gateway uses test/sandbox credentials or live production credentials.

Available options are Sandbox, Live.

Enable Fields

Controls whether CartThrob adds its standard customer-information fields to the gateway output.

Choose Yes to include those fields with the PayPal checkout UI. Choose No to omit them. When they are omitted, your checkout template must provide any customer fields required by checkout_form exactly once; otherwise inline validation can report an error the customer has no field available to correct.

Gateway Fields Template

EE template used by {gateway_fields} and {selected_gateway_fields}.

When configured, this template replaces CartThrob’s complete default gateway output. It must include every required customer field and PayPal integration element. Do not render the custom output together with duplicate inputs using the same names or IDs. See Gateway-generated fields and inline errors.

Checkout behavior

For ordinary, non-subscription checkout, the built-in integration supports CartThrob’s finalized checkout quote. If address data, a coupon, or a supported checkout_form amount parameter changes the amount, CartThrob creates the PayPal order from the recalculated total. Optional purchaser review is controlled by price_change_handling; omitting it uses the silent none default.

This finalized-quote flow does not apply to PayPal subscription checkout or custom PayPal JavaScript that bypasses CartThrob’s built-in preparation flow. Omit amount-changing checkout parameters in those flows unless the custom integration implements the same server-authoritative quote contract. See Checkout Amounts and Payment Review.

Payments requiring reconciliation

In CartThrob 10, supported ordinary checkouts can be held as Processing when collection is confirmed but the order needs review, or the capture outcome is uncertain.

The finalized-quote path records a capture attempt before sending it to PayPal. The legacy ordinary path verifies a previously collected payment with PayPal; a failed lookup before trusted evidence exists is outside automatic recovery.

Verify the original capture, amount, and currency in PayPal before another payment attempt. For an eligible saved order, Complete paid order — no charge finishes supported local checkout work and creates missing configured Purchased Item entries. A refund, cancellation, or unpaid finding uses a record-only resolution. Perform refunds in PayPal first; the resolution buttons do not refund or charge money. Recurring-payment and missing-recovery-data cases require separate manual handling. See gateway coverage.

Refunds

CartThrob does not issue PayPal Standard refunds through Order Manager. Complete the refund in PayPal. If an Order Manager refund is attempted, CartThrob returns an actionable message instead of calling the removed legacy refund path.
